Putting the Sacred Back in Sacrifice

In contemporary usage, the word sacrifice is most often used in secular terms to stand in for the idea of giving up something. In ancient times, sacrifice was a way to be in closer relationship with the Divine. What have we lost by stripping the concept of sacrifice from its sacred roots? What could we gain if we put the sacred back in sacrifice?
